DAC basketball tiebreaker rules

With the Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball race about as tight as it can be, and the women's standings fairly close too, the Dakota Athletic Conference is here to give you a refresher course on their tiebreaker procedures:

In the event of a tie in the final conference standings, the following procedure will be followed:
1. Head-to-head competition. In cases involving more than two teams, the tied teams are considered to be in the same position and total record versus all teams involved will be used.
2. Head-to-head competition with all teams in conference play. Starting with the No. 1 team in the final standings, compare records versus each team in descending order until the tie is broken. Tied teams are considered to be in the same positions and total record versus all teams involved will be used.
3. Win-loss percentage against all NAIA Division II nonconference opponents. The higher winning percentage will break the tie, even if the number of games are unequal; in the case of a tied percentage versus the team or group of 1.000 or .000, the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
4. Coin toss conducted by the commissioner.

The DAC tournaments begin Wednesday, Feb. 24 with the quarterfinals. The semifinals are Sunday, Feb. 28 and the championship games are scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at the home of the higher seed.

The tournament champion will represent the DAC at the NAIA Division II National Tournaments on March 10-16. The men's national tournament will be held at Point Lookout, Mo., and the women's tournament is in Sioux City, Iowa.

Shaved heads = wins

Sometimes, you have to eat your words. That's what Dickinson High boys basketball coach John Wilson and his staff discovered Thursday night after Joe Hanstad hit a game-winning 3-pointer to beat Bismarck Century 62-61.

When the shot fell, the razors and the shaving cream were brought out. Well, not right there, of course. But later that night.

As Wilson tells it, earlier this week, practice was incredibly sluggish. The Midgets had lost five in a row and had fallen into a seemingly inescapable rut. Hanstad, the junior and returning Gatorade player of the year, wasn’t overpowering teams and the trickle-down effect it was having on his teammates was staggering.

“I could just tell that we were just kind of a little bit down on ourselves and I got sick of seeing us how we were moving us,” Wilson said.

So, he stopped practice and asked his players what he needed to do to motivate them. During his speech, he let the words slip out, “Do I have to shave my head?”
It turned a few heads and created a few smiles.

So, Wilson and his assistants — Dan Pender and Brian Ham — made a deal with the players that if they beat fourth-ranked Century, they would shave their heads.

At 10:45 p.m. Thursday night in the boys locker room, the coaches lost their locks, or whatever a couple of them had left anyway.

On Friday night, Dickinson was down 14 points to Bismarck Century before going on a 15-0 run to take the lead late in the second half. The Midgets went on to win 56-55.

Below is a quick video I shot of the Wilson, Pender, Hanstad and senior captain Timmy Kessel, talking about the incident.

According to Wilson, this look may last a while. Well, at least until the Midgets lose again, anyway.

In a side note, Hanstad scored 32 points in the win and moved closer to becoming Dickinson High’s all-time leading scorer.

In the 60s, Vern Praus had 1,336 points for the Midgets without the use of the 3-point line. While Hanstad uses the 3-ball frequently, you can’t take away from the fact that he’s already at this point as a junior.

Hanstad 1,308 points for his career and hit the 1,300-point milestone with a 3-pointer during Dickinson’s 15-point run.

He needs 28 points to tie the record and the Midgets play at Williston next Thursday. When Williston visited the Midgets, Hanstad scored 29.

If he doesn’t do break the record in that game, he’ll likely do so next Saturday when Minot and former Midgets coach Dean Winczewski come to town.

That’s the storybook way to do it, but we’ll just have to wait and see. The Midgets might need another 30-point night out of the 6-foot-4 guard if they hope to defeat the Coyotes again.

'Groseclose is Nostradamus'

My friend Eric Peterson, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference reporter at The Forum, turned me on to this video of the University of Mary's 67-66 victory over Concordia-St. Paul from last Saturday. Listen closely to the chat between broadcasters Jack Michaels and Jeff Groseclose early in the video and then watch the magic happen.

Former Killdeer cowboy wins at Denver

Clayton Morrison, a 26-year-old Killdeer High School graduate, won the steer wrestling short round and finished second in the average at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver last weekend to pocket nearly $9,000 and move into an first place spot in the PRCA standings with $11,500 earned for the season. Morrison's primary residence is currently Cavalier and he is a graduate of the University of Wyoming.

Blue Hawks weekend wrapup

Note: This was supposed to be posted Sunday afternoon. And then the power went out.

Dickinson State Men
Yet again, we saw two different Dickinson State men's basketball teams run the floor at Scott Gymnasium.

On Friday night, the Blue Hawks were a shell of a team against Black Hills State. Their execution on both ends was limited and letting the Yellow Jackets open up a 16-1 lead in the first half pretty much showed us what the game was going to be like. By the end of the night, DSU fans were aching for the refs to just blow the whistle and put the Hawks out of their misery.

On Saturday night, things changed. The Hawks had a bounce in their step. Shots started to fall and momentum began to build (even if it didn't always coincide with a lead). Against South Dakota Mines, the Hawks never hung their heads and they never let one or two breakdowns in a row snowball on them and allow Mines to break away. Instead, DSU used a couple lucky breaks and calls to its advantage -- something it hasn't been able to do a lot of this season -- and won a game they were supposed to win.

The player of the game, in my book, was John Hanstad. The freshman came off the bench to score 11 points and 10 of them came during a 17-6 run in which DSU turned a 49-44 deficit into a 61-55 lead. Not only did the hometown boy get the fans going with his shooting and athletic drive to the hoop that drew a foul, he found ways to get open in places where senior point guard Brian Lebsock could find him. Lebsock ended up with nine assists, providing good opportunities for his brother, Nathan Lebsock, who had 18 points, and Hanstad to take open shots.

If the Blue Hawks can bottle the type of game they had against Mines -- minus the 14 of 31 free throw performance, of course -- they'll be a team that could shake things up when the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament rolls around. Then again, if they look like they did against Black Hills State. Well, be prepared to see a first-round exit.

Dickinson State Women
After winning six in a row, most of those away from Scott Gym, the Blue Hawks came home to play two very winnable DAC games. They left with two losses and everyone begging to have only one question answered: What is it going to take for this team to show the kind of heart it had in tough situations last season?

In both losses, DSU struggled down the stretch. Against Black Hills State on Friday, the Hawks made their last field goal at 2:22 and made just one free throw after that as they fell 54-47.
In Saturday's 53-50 loss to South Dakota Mines -- a team giving up 75 points a game -- DSU made its final field goal with 4:15 remaining when Jessica Nieves came off the bench and knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing to cut Mines' lead to 50-47. After three free throws, DSU cut the lead to 51-50 and had numerous chances to put away the game in the final seconds. Kelsey Boedeker's look from the right side was decent and she can hit that shot. Sometimes they just don't fall.

It became more apparent to me than every over the weekend just how much this team misses Ashley Emmons. Both of these were the kind of games that Emmons took control of down the stretch last season. She was a catalyst for almost everything they did last season, and that is glaringly apparent at this point. But I've got news for the Hawks. Emmons isn't coming back. She's sitting in the crowd, watching your games and enjoying married and professional life with a baby on the way and a team of her own to coach. Someone else has to step up to the task and take over in the clutch. Kia Herbel can only do so much. She's not a ball handler. And ball handlers have to know when and how to get her the ball in these situations.

One reader asked me if I thought first-year head coach Andre Goldberg was out-coached at the end of both these games. Yes and no.

Goldberg is a 25-year-old head coach. He's like a freshman starting on the varsity. No matter what he does right, he's going to experience growing pains. Ask any veteran coach and they'll say the same thing about their first years. However, many of those veteran coaches will tell you they didn't inherit the type of team Goldberg did. He has good basketball knowledge and is doing a decent job of trying to fill Guy Fridley's shoes. One of the flaws I'm seeing with this team now, and this goes back to coaching, is that they are taking WAY too long to get off a shot. There's one thing to be said about looking for a good shot. But, there is also the case for the numbers. Last year, DSU averaged 69 points per game. This year, that number has fallen to 64.8, which is the second-worst in the DAC. This team has too many weapons on offense to be the second-lowest scoring team in this conference. That, and have a 12-8 record.

On the other hand, there is only so much a coach can make his players do. He's not a puppet master, controlling them from the sidelines. I think there were certain times in both games where DSU players made unintelligent choices that hindered any kind of momentum they might have had. It didn't help that, in the Mines game, Herbel was limited by a double team and then foul trouble, some of which could be disputed.

DSU could have jumped into control of the DAC over the weekend and moved their way up the NAIA poll, putting themselves into a position for an at-large berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament. Now, its out of the poll and is sitting in the middle of the pack at the midway point of the conference season unclear about what the rest of the year, let alone the conference tournament, may hold. Last season, DSU fed off its home-court advantage in the tournament. Regardless of how the Hawks performed at home last weekend, they're going to want at least one home game.

DSU hits the road this weekend to play Valley City State on Friday and No. 6-ranked Jamestown College on Saturday. Both teams will be coming off short rests because the blizzard forced their Saturday games to be postponed until Tuesday night (Jamestown College plays Mayville State and VCSU plays Dakota State). DSU has to take advantage of this and win a pair on the road. Otherwise, what looked like a promising season from the start could become very shaky down the stretch.
