South star Wawers signs with JC baseball

Fargo South 3-sport standout Matt Wawers has signed a Dakota Athletic Conference letter of intent to play baseball for the Jimmies.

Wawers, a pitcher and infielder for the Bruins and Fargo Post 2 American Legion baseball team, also led the South football team in receptions as a junior and senior. He also led the Bruin basketball team in assists this past season as the team reached the state tournament.

On the diamond, Wawers hit .346 with 12 RBIs and 7 walks in 52 at bats. He also went 3-0 on the mound, posting an ERA of 0.34, with 23 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.

Wawers also carries a GPA of 3.7 and is a member of the National Honor Society.

“We are excited that Matt has chosen to wear a Jimmie uniform,” said JC coach Tom Hager. “He’s had an outstanding high school athletic career and we expect much of the same here at Jamestown College."

Varriano earns honorable mention All-America

Jamestown College's Giuli Varriano was named NAIA All-American honorable mention on Tuesday.

Varriano finished as the third-leading scorer in JC history with 1,443 points.

On the men's side, JC junior standout C.J. Peeters was robbed.

Black Hills State got Luke Enos on the 1st team (good), and Cain Atkinson (what?) on the 2nd team.

Orlando Anderson (OK) and Nate Lebsock (fine) were honorable mention, but Peeters and maybe even Hans Hoeg were snubbed.

Peeters should have been on there somewhere. The kid played virtually every position on the floor this season and did it well for the Jimmies. Not only that, he's a quote machine and very easy to talk to.

He was hosed!

The Blue Jays finished the season 10-11 and fell short of the state tournament after going 0-2 at the West Region tournament.

Rain washes out JC baseball team again

For the second straight day, rain in the Sunshine State cost the Jamestown College baseball team a couple of games.

Friday was the final day of the Jimmies’ trip to Ormond Beach, Fla., but due to the wet weather, they ended up only getting to play 6 games instead of the scheduled 10.

The Jimmies, who went 4-2 in their 6 games in Florida, were supposed to play Tiffin (Ohio) and Ashford (Iowa) Friday.

The forecast for the rest of the weekend was for sun and 70-plus degrees.

It was especially disappointing for Tom Hager’s team, who lost a mountain of games last season because of the endless winter and soaking spring.

“It’s frustrating for this to happen, but there isn’t much anybody can do about it,” he said. “We thought we played pretty good baseball when we actually were able to get out there and play. Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to get out there as much as we would have liked.”

Weather and field-conditions permitting, the Jimmies (7-3) are scheduled to play back-to-back doubleheaders against Midland Lutheran on March 20 and 21 in Fremont, Neb.

JC women beaten in Sioux City

The Jamestown College women’s basketball team had its season come to an end on Friday, due in large part to cold shooting.

The Jimmies, who finished the season with a school record 26 wins, shot just 35 percent in their 72-60 loss to Iowa Wesleyan in the second round of the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Jimmies (26-7) were especially off from deep, making just 3 of 23 3-point attempts in the game.

Despite misfiring on offense, the Jimmies led 38-32 early in the second half after scoring 8 of the first 9 points of the second 20 minutes.

But it was a struggle the rest of the way.

Iowa Wesleyan went on a 15-2 run that lasted nearly 8 minutes to build a 55-44 lead.

The Jimmies got within 3 as late as 60-57 on a basket by Allison Epping, but they scored just 3 points over the final 3:10.

Giuli Varriano finished her stellar career at JC with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Allison Epping, another senior, added 12 off the bench.

It also marked the final game for Cori Doubek, Amanda Rantapaa, Katie O’Neill and Ali Edwards.

Junior Kellie Schuneman was saddled with foul trouble and played just 21 minutes.
The Jimmies turned ball over 18 times and committed 20 fouls.

Iowa Wesleyan (28-6) wasn’t any better in taking care of the ball with 22 giveaways. They won the game at the foul line, making 24 of their 26 attempts.

Jessi Beachey score all 19 of her points in the second half for the Tigers. Melanie McCreight also had 19.

JC men fall to defending champs

The Jimmies put up a good fight, but Oklahoma Wesleyan had a little too much in the end as the defending NAIA champions beat Jamestown College 75-70 in first-round action at the NAIA national tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.

Steve Briggs led the 28-4 Eagles with 24 points in the game.

The Jimmies took their first lead of the game at the 12:06 mark of the second half on a free throw by Eric Shulstad. But Oklahoma Wesleyan scored on its next possession and stayed in front the rest of the way.

The Jimmies, who finished the season at 20-12, were led by C.J. Peeters with 19 points. Kensal native Ross Florhaug added 15.

The Jimmie scored 10 of the first 15 points of the second half to take a 47-46 lead.

That was their only lead, but they did hold the Eagles 15 points under their season average.

JC baseball team washed out Thursday

The Jamestown College baseball team was rained out in Ormond Beach, Fla., on Thursday, and the forecast is not promising for Friday, according to JC head coach Tom Hager.

The Jimmies were supposed to play two against Ohio Dominican today, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

Friday is the final day of the week-long trip. The Jimmies are scheduled to play Tiffin (Ohio) and Ashford (Iowa), but again, the forecast calls for more rain in Florida.

The Jimmies are 7-3 overall on the season and 4-2 on their trip to the Sunshine State.
